What is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition that can develop after someone experiences or witnesses a traumatic event, such as combat, assault, abuse, an accident, or natural disasters. It’s more than just a temporary response to fear or stress—PTSD can cause long-lasting effects on a person’s mental health, emotions, and daily functioning. Common symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, distressing memories, nightmares, heightened anxiety, emotional numbness, and avoiding reminders of the trauma.

Many people who develop PTSD also struggle with related issues like mood disorders, substance use, and anxiety disorders, making early diagnosis and intervention crucial. At Luxury Psychiatry Clinic, our clinicians perform thorough assessments to understand the root causes and triggers of PTSD so we can recommend the most effective treatment options for each individual. Whether the trauma was recent or occurred long ago, recovery is possible with the right coping strategies, therapies, and support.

Do You Have to Be a Veteran to Have PTSD?

No, you do not have to be a veteran to have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While the condition is often associated with military combat, PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. This includes survivors of abuse, assault, accidents, natural disasters, or sudden loss—among many other experiences. Adolescents, children, and adults alike can develop PTSD, regardless of their background or profession.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can manifest in many ways, often disrupting a person’s daily life, relationships, and sense of safety. Recognizing the early signs is crucial for seeking effective PTSD treatment, especially in cities like Chicago where professional mental health support is readily available. While symptoms vary from person to person, many individuals experience emotional, psychological, and physical reactions to traumatic memories that don’t fade over time.

Common signs and symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Flashbacks or reliving the traumatic event

  • Avoidance of places, people, or situations that remind you of the trauma
  • Emotional numbness or detachment from loved ones
  • Persistent feelings of fear, guilt, or shame
  • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares

  • Mood swings or sudden irritability
  • Trouble concentrating or memory issues
  • Negative beliefs about oneself or the world (negative thoughts)

How Common Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a significant mental health condition affecting a notable portion of the U.S. population. According to the National Center for PTSD, approximately 5% of adults in the United States experience PTSD annually, equating to about 13 million individuals. Lifetime prevalence is estimated at 6.8%, indicating that nearly 7 out of every 100 adults will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Notably, women are more than twice as likely as men to develop PTSD, with 8% of women and 4% of men affected during their lifetime.

Certain populations are at an elevated risk for PTSD. Veterans, for instance, show higher prevalence rates compared to civilians. Studies have found that approximately 15% of male and 9% of female Vietnam veterans were diagnosed with PTSD during the National Vietnam Veterans’ Readjustment Study. Additionally, first responders and individuals exposed to violent conflict or war zones are more susceptible to developing PTSD. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that 3.9% of the population has experienced PTSD at some point in their lives, with higher rates observed among those exposed to violent conflict or war.
